Protecting Others while Transporting Animals

When animals are moved through the building, non-research staff and/or visitors to the University could be unexpectedly exposed to animal allergens. Precautions for moving animals include:

1. Use freight elevators only and avoid moving animals through public areas.

2. A secured (tape, clips and or bookbands) microisolator filtered top cage with coverage (disposable or reusable impervious drape) should be used.

3. If transporting more than two cages a sanitizeable cart should be used to transport the cages. Cages should be placed on the lower shelves of the cart whenever possible.

4. The route taken to transport animals should be the most direct, least populated route. Never transport through hospital areas where non-research staff/visitors are more likely to be ill or susceptible to illnesses.
