Environmental enrichments may enhance animal well-being. Enrichment items should be reviewed by the IACUC, researchers and veterinarians to ensure that they are beneficial to the animal's well being and that they do induce stress or otherwise affect experimental standardization.
Cats definitely need scratching posts or similiar devices in cages and enthusiastically play with a variety of toys.
