EUTHANASIA

Euthanasia can be accomplished by intravenous administration of an overdose of sodium pentobarbital or a commercial euthanasia solution. Sodium pentobarbital can also be injected intraperitoneally but the euthanasia solutions might be irritating and painful by that route.

Anesthetized animals can be euthanatized by an overdose of pentobarbital or by administering potassium chloride directly into the heart. Intercardiac injection is painful and can only be given to an anesthetized animal. An overdose of any gaseous anesthetic agent will also cause humane death of the animal.
