Every institution must have a plan to provide emergency animal care seven days per week. The veterinarian or an informed substitute must be available at all times.
The veterinarian must always coordinate treatment of research subjects with the principal investigator or a designated representative. The administration of a seemingly benign medication can ruin research results and nullify months of effort. Pre-planning can provide the veterinarian with instructions for collection and preservation of tissue in the event that an animal needs to euthanatized.
An occupational health program is required for institutions supported by Public Health Service funds and is recommended for all organizations conducting research. The program should offer periodic physical examinations, immunizations and information on laboratory safety, personal hygiene and zoonotic diseases.
