EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES (cont)

A venous catheter is routinely used for repeated intravenous injections or for several blood collections. The cephalic vein is the best site for the venous catheter but it can also be placed in the branch of the lateral saphenous or jugular veins. To place the catheter, prep the site for venipuncture, and penetrate the skin and vein wall with the catheter unit.  When blood appears in the hub, advance the outer catheter, threading it into the vein while you hold the needle steady.
