EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES (cont)
Subcutaneous (SQ) injections should be given in the side of the neck. Raise the skin with the thumb and forefinger, swab the site with alcohol, and penetrate the skin using a downward-forward motion. Then inject the material under the skin.
Intradermal injections are best given in the central abdominal area. Clip the hair, swab the area with alcohol and penetrate the outer layers of skin with a 3/8 inch 25 or 26 gauge needle. The intradermal injection should produce a characteristic bleb or blister.
An intraperitoneal injection is made in the abdominal area on the midline at a point approximately one-third of the distance from the umbilicus to the symphysis pubis. Use a 1 inch 20 -22 gauge needle to firmly penetrate the abdominal wall. The needle should not be jabbed to avoid the possibility of penetrating the abdominal organs.
