Specific cage or pen size for dogs is regulated by the USDA. Regulations state that "cage height must be sufficient for the dog to easily stand in a comfortable normal position". Floor space requirements, on the other hand, are based on the length of the dog. The regulations state that the following formula be used to determine cage size;
(the length of the dog + six inches) X (the length of the dog + six inches) / 144.
