HOUSING AND SOCIAL NEEDS (cont)
Regulations on exercise for dogs are required by the 1985 Animal Welfare Act amendments. Dogs can be exercised by giving them additional floor space in the primary enclosure. Also resting boards in runs can be used for exercise. Exercise pens may be made available for dogs routinely housed in cages.

Social enrichment should include animal to animal contact and animal to human contact. Dogs should be acknowledged and petted - even if just briefly - during project related handling. Petting and calming words familiarize the animal with human contact and reduce apprehension.
