SANITATION (cont)
Ultraviolet light sources are often used in the water systems to reduce bacterial and viral pathogens. UV light may also help reduce some algae formation. Ultraviolet light bulbs lose their effectiveness over time and they need to be changed about every 8 to 10 months.
Water quality should be monitored frequently for pH, ammonia and nitrate concentrations. Kits are available from commercial vendors that can quickly analyze the condition of water using colorimetric tests. More sophisticated testing instruments are available depending on the accuracy needed to test water quality.
