HOUSING AND SOCIAL NEEDS

Aquariums can be made of glass, acrylic or various types of polycarbonate materials. Aquaria or tanks made of glass may not be suitable in large research applications because they may break if accidentally bumped.

Acrylic tanks are more shatter-proof than those made of glass. Although these tanks are easy to maintain, they are more expensive than glass tanks and are easier to scratch.

Single or multiple polycarbonate tanks similar to rodent shoebox caging can be utilized. Zebrafish are often housed in polycarbonate tank systems that have a self -cleaning design and a biological filtration system. These systems can also use a fluidized filtration bed that combines mechanical filtration and ultra violet light to maintain a healthy microenvironment for the fish.
