EUTHANASIA

Methods for euthanasia must be approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and the institutional veterinarian. The recommendations of the American Veterinary Medical Association Panel on Euthanasia should be used as a guide.

An overdose of MS-222 is the most common method for euthanasia of fish. Fish can be placed in a tank containing a solution of 200-500 mg/liter of MS-222 for about 10 minutes or until the cessation of opercular movement. Another method used is submersion of the fish in ice water followed by cranial concussion and decapitation.
