Automatically controlled lighting should be used to provide a regular light:dark cycle that is normally 12:12 or 14:10. The recommended illumination level measured at the surface of the water for zebrafish is between 5 and 30 foot candles or 54 - 324 lux.
The schooling habits of some fish may indicate they are sociable although zebrafish seem more or less indifferent to housing conditions. Zebrafish have been kept in isolation for extended periods and afterwards were able to breed successfully. Species-typical behaviors that you should consider for determining the type of housing include swimming patterns, feeding preferences, mating methods and normal social interactions of the species.
