SANITATION

Water quality is one of the most important factors in maintaining fish health. Water used in a tank system may need to be treated to remove chlorine and chloramines. Commercial agents are available that can readily remove chlorine. Chloramines are more difficult to treat because of the strong chemical bond between chlorine and ammonia that has to be broken before treatment can occur.

Tanks are normally designed to use water that either flows through or recirculates within the system. The flow-through design maintains water quality by exchanging or replacing old water with new water. Tanks using a recirculation system rely on water flowing thru filter media to maintain water quality.
