NUTRITION (cont)

Feeding hay provides roughage and other nutritional value. Be sure to make gradual changes when altering a goat's diet to avoid acidosis and other health problems.

The use of salt blocks or crystal salt sprinkled over feed may stimulate water drinking to produce more dilute urine. This may decrease the chance of the formation of urinary calculi. Only NaCl (sodium chloride) blocks should be used. You should avoid the use of other mineral blocks as they may contain inappropriate levels of copper, calcium and phosphorus as well as other minerals.
