IDENTIFICATION AND RECORDS
Goats may be identified in a variety of ways. Numbered tags and tattoos are the most common method. Nylon or leather dog collars can also be used.

Electronic chips serve as a permanent source of identification although these are not practical for a quick visual means of identification. These chips are aseptically inserted by a needle under the skin usually at the base of the neck.
Cage cards should be kept for each animal as well as individual health records that include veterinary preventative medicine procedures, treatments, animal maintenance practices, research procedures and disposition of the animal.
