Since experimental procedures have the potential for injuring the animal - experience becomes the best teacher. Techniques that are new to a person should be learned from an experienced operator and practiced under supervision.

Blood may be obtained from the jugular vein by occluding it distal to the needle insertion. After the vein becomes distended you may proceed with the venipuncture using a 20 gauge needle.

Indwelling catheters may be surgically placed in any vessel. The jugular vein is the primary site for catheter placement. Once the catheter is secured, the neck may be loosely wrapped with a cohesive flexible bandage.
