EUTHANASIA
Methods for euthanasia must be approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and the institutional veterinarian. The recommendations of the American Veterinary Medical Association Panel on Euthanasia should be used as a guide.
The most common method of euthanasia for goats used in biomedical research is an overdose of sodium pentobarbital. A variety of commercial euthanasia solutions are available. The use of sedatives prior to IV injection of sodium pentobarbital will facilitate the process. After no detectable respiration, heartbeat, or reflexes creation of a bilateral pneumothorax will insure non-recovery. This is done by making a small incision bilaterally in the chest wall at an intercostal space.
