BASIC HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS (cont)

There should be a program that provides continued health monitoring for animals after their release from quarantine. This should include daily observation, laboratory diagnostics, treatment if indicated and euthanasia of moribund animals. Necropsies should be performed as needed.

Any animals with a health problem found during the quarantine period or after release from quarantine should be isolated until you can make a definitive diagnosis.

The veterinarian has the ultimate responsibility to assure that adequate analgesia, anesthesia, and post-operative care are provided. He or she should be consulted about the appropriateness of a particular analgesic or anesthetic agent for each surgical procedure. USDA regulations and NIH guidelines require that aseptic technique be used for guinea pig surgery.
