EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES (cont)

A needle stomach tube is used to administer oral medications or test compounds to the guinea pig.  A ball tipped gavage needle on a dosing syringe is carefully passed over the tongue into the esophagus and into the stomach.  The operator should be trained in determining if the needle is in the stomach.  A stomach should never be administered if you are unsure of the placement of the needle.
