NUTRITION
Commercial diets are available that provide all known essential nutrients for rodents. For routine maintenance and for most experiments, pelletized feeds are offered to the animals ad libitum. Since the incisors of rodents grow continuously, gnawing the hard pellets helps keep these teeth at the proper length.
Hamsters prefer to take feed and pile it in a specific place within the cage. Because of this behavior it is considered acceptable to place feed on the floor of the cage. When using a cage lid with a built in feeder you should make sure that the wire bars are spaced far enough apart to allow hamsters to fit their muzzle into the food hopper.
