EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES (cont)

For parenteral dosing, test materials are injected intramuscularly, subcutaneously, intraperitoneally or intravenously.

In hamsters, intramuscular injections are usually given in the posterior portion of the rear leg using a 20 -25 gauge needle. The needle should not penetrate more than a quarter inch.

Subcutaneous injections are generally administered between the shoulder blades or in the flank. Slightly elevate the skin with your fingers and insert a small gauge needle just beneath the skin.

Intraperitoneal injections are directed above the inguinal region lateral to the midline.
