RESPONSIBILITY FOR HUMANE ANIMAL RESEARCH (cont)
The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee is appointed by the senior administrator of the institution. Membership includes at least one scientist, a veterinarian, a non-scientist, and a person not affiliated with the institution who represents general community interests in the proper care and treatment of animals.
The IACUC is responsible for evaluating animal research proposals and for monitoring the animal care and use program. USDA and NIH will not become involved if the institution recognizes and corrects its deficiencies. If the institution fails to react however, these agencies may become involved to the extent that legal action or grant withdrawal can occur.
