Protecting the welfare of the animals while permitting the scientific program to progress may present ethical dilemmas. Procedures must be carefully assessed while weighing the value of the research against the level and duration of pain or distress to the animal.
Members of the IACUC must be objective and not automatically approve or oppose every decision of the majority. As you consider these obligations, it is obvious that service on this committee requires a serious commitment of time and effort.
