RESPONSIBILITY FOR HUMANE ANIMAL RESEARCH (cont)
Proper nursing care must be provided during night, weekend and holiday periods and must include treatment to relieve pain and distress if indicated.
Pain and distress in laboratory animals must be appropriately relieved at all times. An annual report to the USDA is required that certifies that the type and amount of analgesic, anesthetic and tranquilizing drugs used in animals were deemed appropriate to relieve pain and distress for subject animals. The veterinarian must frequently, personally, monitor animal health and condition including the period when the animal is on a research project.
