RESPONSIBILITY FOR HUMANE ANIMAL RESEARCH (cont)
The Principal Investigator (P.I.) has the major responsibility for developing and conducting research and, therefore, is ultimately responsible for humane care of animals being used in her or his investigations. Likewise, the faculty member who is responsible for a teaching laboratory is also responsible for animals used in that laboratory. Compliance with the spirit and letter of the guidelines and regulations is essential. The investigator can demonstrate compliance by ensuring responsible use of animals in the laboratory as well as by supporting and, possibly, serving on the IACUC.
The P.I. must plan research with humane animal procedures in mind. This should include an extensive literature search to find;
1 - suitable alternatives to animal use
2 - procedures that might be less painful
3 - improved methods for the relief of pain or distress
A scientific justification must be included in the proposal if animals are to experience undue pain or distress during the project.
