RESPONSIBILITY FOR HUMANE ANIMAL RESEARCH (cont)
The laboratory animal care manager and laboratory animal technicians are responsible for animal husbandry and daily animal observation. They must review the approved project with the investigator to determine special needs of the animals and possible effects of the research on the animals - such as altered behavior or appearance. The manager of the animal research facility and the team of laboratory animal technicians are important links between the animals and the investigator.
The laboratory animal manager and technicians are also essential to the animal health and humane care programs. They will report questionable behavior, reduced food intake and other characteristics to the veterinarian or animal health technician and the P.I.. They will also report animals in pain or distress to the appropriate person to obtain prompt treatment. The laboratory animal technicians must be properly trained in every aspect of laboratory animal science.
