HUMANE EXPERIMENTATION (cont)
Aseptic technique is essential for all survival surgery because it reduces the incidence of infection and thereby lowers morbidity and mortality. Public Health Service guidelines now recommend aseptic surgical technique for rats and mice as well as the other warm blooded species that were previously covered (i.e. guinea pigs, rabbits, dogs, and cats). Be sure to follow all USDA regulations relating to aseptic surgical technique.
Painful procedures must be conducted under anesthesia. Survival surgery must be followed by nursing care and may include administering analgesics, fluids and antibiotics. Adequate technical staffing to meet these needs during regular and non-work times is mandatory.
