HUMANE EXPERIMENTATION (cont)
Withholding anesthetics or analgesics must be justified scientifically and approved by the IACUC. Convenience, insufficient technical support or cost are not suitable reasons for failure to provide adequate anesthesia or analgesia.
Scientists should always be sensitive to the possibility of inflicting undue pain or distress in research animals. Approaches to eliminating or minimizing pain and distress in research animals are categorized as follows;
1- refinement of technique
2 - reduction in the number of animals
3- and replacement of vertebrate animals with species lower on the evolutionary scale or the employment of non-animal techniques.
These modifications should be introduced into a project only if they are compatible with the scientific goals of the study.
