REPORTING DEFICIENCIES IN ANIMAL CARE

All institutions that use research animals should have a written policy for reporting deficiencies in animal care. While these policies will vary between facilities, here is a basic guide to the types of problems that may be encountered with suggested methods for reporting.

Deficiencies in basic animal needs, extremes in environmental temperature, and animal illnesses should be promptly reported. The animal care supervisor should be informed about facility problems and the veterinarian or animal health technician about sick or injured animals. It is your responsibility to locate the responsible person if the animal's well being is involved. Do not be satisfied to leave a note and assume that someone will take care of it.
