CONTAINMENT PROCEDURES AND EQUIPMENT (cont)
A publication by the Centers for Disease Control entitled "Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories" discusses containment methods involving research with experimentally or naturally infected animals. This publication defines four levels of containment with relation to occupational risks from infectious materials.
The levels of containment range from Level 1 which may be suitable for teaching laboratories to level 4 which is used for dangerous agents that pose life-threatening risks. These levels of containment vary by combinations of laboratory practices and techniques, safety equipment and facility design.
