ZOONOSES (cont)
Rodents
Immunologically compromised rodents such as the nude mouse and the severe combined immuno-deficient (SCID) mouse that receive human xenografts, body fluids or human infectious agent and related materials present a potentially unique and poorly understood risk. (xenozoonosis) These rodents may develop persistent infections while remaining otherwise healthy.
Lymphocytic choriomeningitis (LCM) is a disease that naturally infects rodents. Mice are often of concern in research facilities and their soiled bedding can be the source of infection to humans.
Hantavirus infections in humans can also be associated with rodents.
Rat-bite fever is possible from bite wounds of rodents who harbor the causative microorganisms.
