Annual Report to USDA

Research facilities are required to have procedures in place to complete an annual report to the USDA on the number of animals used in research and teaching. This report includes different categories for pain/distress experienced by the animals used.

These categories are as follows;

C - animals that do not experience pain/distress from testing procedures

D - animals that experience pain/distress which is alleviated with anesthetics, analgesics, sedatives and/or tranquilizers (this includes terminal surgery under anesthesia)

E - animals that experience pain/distress and anesthetics, analgesics, sedatives, and/or tranquilizers are withheld

A written justification that is approved by the IACUC must be provided for animals reported in category E.
