BASIC HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS (cont)
The veterinarian has the ultimate responsibility to insure that all surgical procedures are performed humanely. The veterinarian must also assure that proper and adequate anesthesia is used.
Post-operative care must be provided and may include heat supplementation, humidity, oxygen, parenteral fluids and medications. Humane concern is especially important during post operative periods when analgesics should be judiciously administered to alleviate pain or distress. The animal should be constantly monitored during this period to assure the efficacy of these analgesics.
