BASIC HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS (cont)
Primates may harbor a number of zoonotic diseases that can be transmitted to humans and possibly vice versa. These include tuberculosis, shigellosis, Marburg virus disease and Herpes B virus.
All macaque species should be considered potential carriers of the Herpes B virus and must be handled accordingly. Personnel should consult with the attending veterinarian for current recommendations on protective measures for working with primates - such as appropriate protective clothing and proper restraint methods.
Institutions that conduct animal research must have an occupational health program. This program should provide periodic physical examinations and immunizations. Information should be provided on personal hygiene and zoonotic diseases.
