HOUSING AND SOCIAL NEEDS

Primates may be housed under different systems depending on research requirements such as single cage confinement for individual monitoring, group caging for breeding purposes and corral arrangements for behavioral studies.

Primary caging floor space must meet standards of federal regulations which require a floor space equal to an area of at least three times the area occupied by the primate when standing on four feet.  Immature monkeys gain weight rapidly and can outgrow their cage - you should review cage sizes periodically for compliance.

The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (the "Guide") offers more detailed cage size recommendations for various groups of monkeys that you should review.
