Environmental enrichments may enhance animal well-being. Enrichment items should be reviewed by the IACUC, researchers and veterinarians to ensure that they are beneficial to the animal's well being and that they do induce stress or otherwise affect experimental standardization.
Some enrichment items for rodents include chew sticks and novel bedding materials.
