NUTRITION (cont)
Rabbits enjoy a regular treat of leafy greens. This may enhance the psychological well being of these animals and may help prevent gastric hair balls in rabbits. Greens should be appropriately sanitized to prevent the introduction of pathogens such as Salmonella.
Do not feed a ration that is more than six months old as essential nutrients may have deteriorated. There should be a system for rotating the feed to assure the oldest feed is used first.
Bags of feed should be stored on pallets in a cool, dry and vermin-free room. A storage room with a temperature of 55 -60 degrees F (13 -16 degrees C). will help maintain nutrient levels.
For certain projects it may be necessary to analyze feed for pesticides, antibiotics, heavy metals, aflatoxins, estrogenic activity or other contaminates which may affect the results of the experiment.
