HANDLING AND RESTRAINT

There is a right way and a wrong way to handle and restrain rabbits - both from the standpoint of the animal and the operator.

When attempting to handle or restraint a rabbit, the animal may struggle and thrust with its powerful hind limbs and break its back - therefore you must use extreme care when handling a rabbit.   A rabbit with a broken back must be euthanatized immediately.

Never lift a rabbit by the ears.  The weight of the rabbit must be carried by the hand that supports the hindquarters and by the hand that grasp the scruff of the neck.

Lifting a rabbit

The rabbit may be carried for longer distances by tucking the head beneath the arm and supporting the hindquarters.
