BASIC HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS (cont)
Laboratory animal technicians must be diligent in performing husbandry duties because undue stress and invalid research data may result from animals that are improperly maintained.
The research staff, which includes the principle investigator, post doctoral fellows, graduate students and research technicians, should be familiar with the clinical signs of disease. Report any abnormal finding to the animal technician, supervisor or the veterinarian.
Most institutions that conduct animal research have an occupational health program. The program should offer periodic physical examinations, immunizations and information on laboratory safety, personal hygiene and zoonotic diseases.
