You can use a plastic restrainer for techniques that require that the rat to be restrained for longer periods.
Plastic restrainer for a rat
Rats may be lifted from their cages by the base of their tails but put them on a solid surface as quickly as possible. If they are suspended by holding the end of their tails, they may spin and peel off the skin of their tails. If this happens the animal must be euthanized.
