Blood can be collected from unanesthetized rats by placing them into a restrainer that orients them vertically with the tail free. A 20 or 21 gauge needle with a plastic hub is inserted into the ventral tail artery or into either of the lateral tail veins. The blood will appear in the hub and then pass through the needle into container.
