Replacement The concept of Replacement refers to methods that avoid or replace the use of animals in research. Methods that use inanimate technologies such as computer programs or simulations should be considered for investigations. Replacement of live vertebrate animals with those lower on the evolutionary scale (less sentient) is also encouraged. Organ, tissue or cell tissue culture techniques may also serve as an alternative to the use of animals.
Although the complete replacement of live animals is not possible for many research disciplines, investigators should always consider possible alternatives. The major impetus for using a replacement method is improved technology. Newer methods will be widely accepted when they are proven to be valid substitutes.
