BASIC HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS (cont)

Veterinary care that began when the animals arrived should continue throughout the time that the dogs are in the research facility. Federal regulations require a program of disease prevention and specify that the veterinarian will provide guidance on anesthetics, analgesics, tranquilizing drugs and methods of euthanasia.

The veterinarian must examine animals during surgery and postoperative care to ensure that anesthesia and analgesia are adequate and appropriate.

Federal regulations also require that dogs be observed daily by trained personnel familiar with signs of pain or disease. All abnormalities should be discussed with the veterinarian so that treatment can be initiated. Animals with signs of an infectious disease should be isolated.
