EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES (cont)
The jugular vein is frequently used for collection of large quantities of blood. Gently extend the animal's neck, clip the hair, swab the site with alcohol and apply pressure to the vein at the base of the neck. The vein becomes distended and you may proceed with the venipuncture. This procedure may be used to draw amounts of blood suitable for transfusion. The animal must be accustomed to remaining quiet for the time required for collection of larger quantities or be given a tranquilizer.
