EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES (cont)
Intravenous injections are commonly given in the jugular vein. Apply pressure to the vein at the base of the neck to occlude and distend the vessel and then insert a 20-22 gauge needle with the other hand. It is sometimes helpful to enter the subcutaneous tissue adjacent to the vein and then enter the vein from the side. Release the pressure from the vein prior to injection.
