HUMANE ANIMAL CARE (cont)

Total well-being of animals in a research facility depends on factors such as comfortable housing, socialization with neighboring animals, a well-balanced diet and proper environmental conditions.

Animals must be observed at least daily. If one appears injured or ill the veterinarian or supervisor must be informed as soon as possible. Concern for the animal and the research outcome should always be the primary consideration. The decision to treat an animal or to consider euthanasia should be made by the principal investigator in consultation with the veterinarian.

The veterinarian must develop a preventive medicine program appropriate for each species including testing for the presence of infectious agents, immunizations, through physical examinations and providing treatments as indicated.
