INTRODUCTION (cont)
The NIH has also instituted its own policy for use of animals in research. The latest revision of their policy resulted from the Health Research Extension Act of 1985. This law provides a statutory basis for some previous PHS policies and also adds certain requirements for institutions receiving funds from the PHS.
These institutions must also assure the director of NIH that an appropriate training program is available to scientists, animal technicians and other personnel involved with animal care, treatment and use.
This online based training module and others produced by the Laboratory Animal Training Association are intended to provide the required training by this Act and the Improved Standards for Laboratory Animals Act for scientists, research technicians and others involved with animal care, treatment and use.
