EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES

Although the objectives of research projects may differ widely, experimental techniques conducted on primates generally fall into three major categories; administration of medications, administrations of test agents and collection of specimens.

Collection of blood can be done from the cephalic, saphenous or jugular veins. A very popular site is the femoral plexus. To locate the plexus you first place the index finger in the femoral triangle. The pulse of the femoral artery should be evident. The femoral vein and plexus are found just medial and slightly deeper than the artery. Gently insert a 20 - 22 gauge needle at an approximate angle of 35 degrees in an anterior direction.
