BASIC HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS
A major responsibility of the veterinarian is to provide and manage a preventative medicine program for research animals. There are several aspects to a sound program.
Primates should be purchased only from sources that can provide known health information. Upon arrival the animals should be allowed to stabilize in their new environment.
They must be quarantined for a period sufficient to determine their health status. Testing during this period might include serology for Herpes B or measles. The quarantine period may vary according the source and health status upon acquisition.
