BASIC HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS (cont)
Monkeys should be screened for parasites and treatments should be administered during quarantine.
The canine teeth in male monkeys can inflict injury to other primates and technicians. A humane procedure performed to minimize this possibility is to cut, drill the root canal and cap the canine teeth. The operator must carefully avoid acquiring abrasions or cuts during this procedure to prevent possible exposure to Herpes B.
After animals are released from quarantine, their health status should continue to be monitored and all results recorded. This includes daily observation, disease detection, diagnosis, treatment and euthanasia of moribund animals.
